Minutes of December Meeting

Minutes of Meeting
Shuswap Spinners and Weavers Guild
December 6, 2010

Thanks to Gudrun and Alf for their hospitality.  Gabrielle called the meeting to order at 6 PM with 29 Members present.

Ann moved that the Minutes from the November meeting be adopted.  Seconded by Margaret.  Carried.

Old Business:
Treasurer’s Report was given by Gabrielle, who distributed the cheques.  The Christmas sale this year was our best sale ever.  Total sales this year were more than $2000 over last year, and everyone who had something in the sale sold something.  Revenues reported do not yet include gallery rental.

Despite excellent advertising coverage, Gudie reported a $0 budget.  Comments about the sale focused on displays.  More height, to get items at eye level would be better.  Half busts could be bought at Lisjen for $10 or boxes from the basement of the gallery used.  Keep at eye out at Winners or dollar stores for display items.  The gallery has been booked for the same time next year, that is, after the gallery displays.  An empty gallery was easier to utilize, and reorganize.

New Business:
Gabrielle reported sending cards to Michael D on Gail's passing and to Sue M on her Dad's passing
Room 3 has been booked for March, April and May for Fibres Unlimited to have extended space.  The cost will be and additional $25/ month.

The January 3 meeting was cancelled, as it is still part of the holiday season.

Spin In – January 11 @ Mona’s 10 AM – 2 PM
Knit In – January 17 @ Glenda’s 10 AM – 2 PM
Evening Spin In – Monday Jan 24 @ Rita’s 7 – 9 PM

Ann Nikmo reported on Heritage Days February 19 – 26.  Usually the Spinners and Weavers have something set up at the mall.  This year it will be for Friday, February 25.  If you can assist, call Ann.

Anne also introduced a world-wide competition in June, the same weekend as the Relay for Life.  This Back to Back (Back of the sheep to the back of the person) competition utilizes a team of 8, and no automation.  A blade shearer has been booked, and an unshorn sheep and 6 more team members will be required.  The wool must be spun and knitted raw, and the final product is washed.  Call Ann if you can help with this project.  It would be nice to have a Canadian team in this event.

Alternate sales venues?  The Dragon Boat festival, this year on June 25, supports a certain number of vendors and craft sales on this occasion.  People wishing another sales outlet could look into this.

The Sheep to Shawl Competition will be discussed at the February meeting.

Tapestry Workshop.  Please email Gudrun if you are interested in taking this tapestry workshop in February.

Anne Nikmo – brought a completed fish.  12 have been completed, and there are 14 still to go.  Ann is weaving more material for heads and tails.

Artsolutely is running all month  at the Vernon Arts Centre.

Gudie’s paper making project.  Gudie wishes to contribute 100 cards of recycled paper decorated with thrums to ANWG in Salem Oregon.  She will contact people when a suitable paper making opportunity occurs.

Marcia moved that the meeting be adjourned at 6: 50 PM. For Show and Tell.

Christmas Show and Tell Items

Melissa has been needle felting, I think that she called this creation "Buster Bear".

Ann showing off one of the salmon.  Fish are fashioned out of handwoven fabrics made by guild members then stitched and stuffed.

Lynette and Ngaire showing off stockings that they created to use up some odds and ends from their statshes!

Gudrun's family Christmas stockings made using a boundweave technique.  They even have decorative borders with the names of each family member - sorry that I didn't get a better shot, but she waves her arms alot!

Now who wouldn't want to take this little gal home - another of Melissa's creations.

This gorgeous scarf was produced by a woman whose name
I did not get (please email me so I can include it!).  She said it was her first attempt at "nuno felting" and is justly proud of her results.

Katherine is standing beside the shawl that Gudrun took off the guild loom after several aborted attempts to get the treadles working correctly.  In frustration, she brought it home, threaded it on her own loom and is showing us the end result!  The shawls will be lovely!

Christmas Potluck was excellent

Approximately 30 people attended the affair hosted so graciously by Gudrun and Alfred.  It was a lovely evening full of laughter, great conversations , a fantastic "Show and Tell" and even a bit of music to send folks home with a song in their heart as well as smiles on their faces.  Many, many thanks to Gudrun and Alfred ... as you can see from the photo below, it looks like they also had a good time!
I will post some photos sharing some of the wonderful projects shared by Guild Members.  I am sorry that I do not have photos of everything ... do ask Jean to show you her lovely cards, Gudrun her Christmas stockings, Gabriel the cross-stitch stocking that took her a year to complete, Gudie's "monster yarns" for making "tush cushes (you know cushions that you sit on) .... the list just goes on and on!

Thanks to everyone for supplying such interesting goodies and sweets for the event!  Too many calories, but every one of them was delicious!
... and this was just one corner of the table - the desserts had a whole table to themselves!

A great BIG thank you to all who participated in our Christmas sale on Saturday. (This includes husbands as well.)

Hope to see you at Christmas potluck at Gudrun"s Dec. 6 at 5:00pm.
Til then  thanks again.

Christmas Potluck - December 6th at Gudrun's

Don't forget to put this date on your calendar - 5pm start time.

Guild's Christmas Sale a Huge Success

Folks were lined up waiting for the doors to open at 10 on Saturday and traffic continued to be steady for most of the day.  Locals have obviously learned that it pays to shop early.  By 10:30 there was a queque of people waiting to pay for their selections.  Amazing!

The variety of items that were contributed to the sale is amazing - table linens, towels, toys, hats, mitts, felted slippers, felted bags, felted hats, blankets, jackets, sweaters, gorgeous shawls, handspun ... the list just goes on and on.  I overheard several folks commenting on the quality of the work and how well it was presented.

I know that there were some photos taken - if you would like to email them to me, I will post them here so that members who were not able to attend have a chance to see how special the event really was!

Fibres Unlimited - 1st Monday Afternoon each month

For those of you who are able to attend, there is an informal gathering of guild members on the afternoon of our regularly scheduled meeting in the Guild Room at the Rec Centre.

Folks generally begin arriving at 1:00 pm and make use of guild equipment if they wish to work on guild projects, or individual projects.  Currently one of the Guild looms is warped for Christmas Tea Towels and members are welcome to make use of this warp.  It is a great opportunity to learn new skills as well as having an extended opportunity to socialize before the meeting.

Many of those attending go out for dinner in Salmon Arm before the meeting begins at 7:30 pm.

Christmas Potluck - Monday December 6, 2010

Gudrun and Alf have offered to host the Guild at their home for the annual Christmas Potluck.
Last year there was a very short meeting and a show and tell session but the focus of the gathering was social.  Perhaps we will be able to persuade Gudrun to play the piano for us one more time.   It was a lovely evening!

Time:  5:00 pm ( Gudrun was thinking that an early start might be better for folks as we may encounter winter driving conditions by then but I will confirm this after our next meeting.)

Watch for further details.

SLOW FIBRE FESTIVAL - October 9th

This brand new event patterned after the slow food movement will feature local fibre.  14 Vendors will be in attendance so bring your shopping basket and cash along.  Sponsored by the Desert Sage Guild, the event is being hosted in Summerland.  Address information will be posted when it is available.

Guild Gatherings for October

Dates to add to your calendar include the following.  Please check your membership list for address information and phone numbers.

1.  Spin In - October 12, 2010   10 am - 2 pm
Hostess Gudrun W.  will demonstrate the techniques required to spin linen for any members who are interested in learning how to do this.  If you are not interested in linen spinning, bring your current knitting or spinning project and come anyway.  Please pack a bag lunch.  Tea/ coffee will be provided.

2.  U-Can-Knits - October 18, 2010 10 am - 2 pm
